Magen Yisrael “the Shield of Israel” is a tax-deductible organization created to ensure that all soldiers fighting on the front line in Israel have the latest, most protective, bulletproof vests. The Israeli government has been trying to upgrade all soldiers’ vests. However, due to the current situation many are still waiting to receive them. We, as concerned individuals, want to make sure all soldiers have the best protection availible to them. We feel this is not a luxury, but a matter of life and death. Please read the following letter from a reservist:

“I usually don’t bother you with details of my millu’im (reserve duty). But, as a member of a special unit we have started recently to serve in areas that are a “bit” dangerous. As for the meantime we have usual gear to handle the day-by-day routine: a vest that has been used as a protective measure from spray bomb splinters. However, apparently Palestinian snipers who try to hit us have revently used a new routine. Such events require a special vest that protects from bullet hits. This vest, for combat purpose, costs about $800 per unit. We all know that the economic situation in Israel isn’t at its best, which prevents the army from upgrading all its units with a protective ceramic vest. A trend does exist now to initiate magbit (fundraising) trying to locate additional private sources to cover the new expense of buying a vest for each member of the reserve combat units. My unit has tried it’s own magbit. About 100 soldiers serve in my unit. As for myself, my father is buying one vest for me. However, not everyone can afford to buy a vest. I appeal to your kind devotion to the well being of the Israelis, hoping you could contribute to this noble purpose.”

Magen Yisrael is made up of a small group of volunteers. There are no salaries in this organization. All monies go directly to Jerusalem where we purchase vests Made in Israel. Unlike older vests, these vest have a ceramic plate which serve as a barrier. One vest costs approximately $800.00 including tax. A unit with 100 soldiers would need $80,000 to ensure their protection.
