Terrorist Attempt Ends With Two Wounded

Arutz Sheva January 28, 2002

Today’s complex terrorist attempt ended with the death of the would-be murderer and the wounding of a soldier and a policeman. The incident began around 7 AM this morning when an Arab burst through an army checkpoint near Kalkilye, running over and moderately wounding a soldier in the process. The terrorist continued onto Petach Tikvah, where he crashed into an Israeli car, causing the driver to get out and see what happened. The terrorist then jumped in the car and drove off, allowing the man’s wife to get out some minutes later. (The man and his wife, who were not seriously hurt, are 80 and 71 years of age, respectively.) The Arab then continued to Bnei Brak, where he hit and moderately wounded a policeman. Soon afterwards, policemen shot and killed him.

An 8-year-old boy in Elon Moreh was stabbed in the leg and lightly wounded this afternoon by two Arab terrorists who entered one of the houses on the perimeter of the community. The army placed the nearby village of Azmut, the terrorists’ suspected site of refuge, under curfew… Attacks continued in Gaza this morning, including grenades at an IDF outpost on the Israeli-Egyptian border and a bomb that exploded with no damage in southern Gaza… A bomb was also found and safely dismantled near the Jewish community of Hevron this afternoon.

The IDF has thickened its forces around the Shechem region, where tanks and armed personnel carriers are now blocking the entrances to the city. Palestinian reports are that Jenin, too, is under blockade. The IDF also installed a large metal gate at the eastern entrance to the village of Azun, west of Kalkilye. Movement between the PA city and the nearby villages will thus be under IDF supervision.
