Arab Attacks Continue

Arutz Sheva February 5, 2002

Arabs opened fire on an Israeli vehicle this afternoon seriously wounding 46-year-old Safed resident Moshe Vaknin in the stomach. The incident occurred in Hawara, 25 miles north of Jerusalem. Vaknin continued driving several minutes to the approach road to Yitzhar, where he collapsed. A military helicopter transported him to Tel Aviv’s Tel HaShomer-Sheba Hospital where he is listed in serious but stable condition.

A bomb was detonated last night along the Negohot-Shekef road, northeast of Beer Sheva, as an Israeli car passed by. The explosion caused light damage, but no one was hurt. The road connects the South Har Hevron community of Negohot with the northern Negev, and has been Negohot’s lifeline ever since March, 2000, when the Barak government granted the PLO control over the town’s main access road leading to Gush Etzion and Jerusalem. The population of Negohot, which was once considered to be doomed by the transportation problem, has more than doubled in the past year from 10 families to 21.

Also last night, the army positions of Girit and Tarmit in southern Gaza were targeted by Arab gunfire and grenades. Twenty-five grenades were hurled at the Tarmit post alone. Gunfire was also directed at Gush Katif positions throughout the night. There were no reports of injuries.
