(IsraelNN.com) Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told members of the Knesset Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee that the situation along the northern border is being carefully monitored, adding events could result in the border becoming another hostile front.
Sharon confirmed security forces continue to monitor Hizbullah activities, as well as Syrian support for the terror organization, including Damascus assisting Hizbullah acquire weapons for use against Israel.
Over recent months, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres stated on numerous occasions that Hizbullah has thousands of rockets pointed at Israel.
Sharon stressed his government would continue using all diplomatic means available to avoid a military conflict.
Sharon addressed the issue of Lebanese pumping from the Wazzani, adding that “reasonable use” would be permitted but unlimited pumping or pumping for agricultural use would not be tolerated by Israel.
Complying with a USA request, Jerusalem is carefully monitoring the Lebanese pumping but is maintaining a low profile. Officials however have reiterated the government position, that the illegal Lebanese pumping may not be permitted to continue.
