The controversial movie “Jenin, Jenin” will not be permitted to be screened
in Israel, for now. Supreme Court Justice Eliyahu Matza issued a restraining
order this morning banning the movie until the Court decides how to respond to
requests for a second hearing on the matter.
The Supreme Court ruled three weeks ago that the film – which contains
fabricated photo-montages and “testimony” by Arab residents regarding alleged
Israeli atrocities during last year’s Operation Defensive Shield battles in Jenin -
may be screened in Israel, overruling a previous decision by the Censorship
Council. The Court ruled that the right to freedom of expression outweighed the
film’s lies.
Today’s ruling banning the movie until further notice came in response to
requests for another hearing submitted by Attorney-General Elyakim Rubenstein,
State Prosecutor Edna Arbel, and representatives of the Jenin-battle fighters
and the families of soldiers killed in the battles.
