As incidents against the Jewish community mount, B’nai Brith Canada issues security alert

TORONTO, July 24, 2006 - B’nai Brith Canada has issued a security alert to the community warning that Middle East tensions are having ugly repercussions here in Canada.

“Dangerous ripples of the Middle East conflict are being felt right here at home,” said Frank Dimant, B’nai Brith Canada’s Executive Vice President. “Canada’s Jewish community has come under increasing attack, including a bomb threat against a synagogue, the stoning of worshippers emerging from evening prayer, and a Jewish family being sent a decapitated pig.

“The tension here is palpable as Jewish individuals and community organizations being targeted by persistent phone and email abuse and threats linked directly to events in the Middle East. The community is in a heightened state of alert and is taking these threats very seriously, as are the relevant authorities investigating these matters.

“We have been in ongoing consultation with the RCMP, which has now launched a 24-hour Hotline -1-800-420-5805 - for individuals to report suspicious activity that may be linked to terrorism. B’nai Brith Canada is also encouraging concerned individuals to call the organization’s 24-7 Anti-Hate Community Hotline at 1-800-892-2624.”
