Arafat’s “Cease-Fire,” After 6 Weeks: 407 Attacks, 16 Dead, 77 Wounded

Background: On the afternoon of June 2, 2001, the international media reported that Yasir Arafat had ordered his forces to immediately halt all violence against Israel. U.S.Secretary of State Colin Powell said on NBC-TV’s “Meet the Press” on June 3, 2001 that Arafat “has a great deal control” over the violence and, in addition, “he has the moral authority as the leader of the Palestinians–people look to him for leadership, that will carry great weight.”

During the first five weeks following the announcement of Arafat’s “cease-fire,” there were 348 terrorist attacks against Israelis, in which 13 people were killed and 64 were wounded.

The list which follows describes Palestinian Arab terrorist attacks which took place during the sixth week of Arafat’s “cease-fire,” from Sunday, July 8, 2001, through Saturday, July 15, 2001. During this period, there were 59 attacks, in which 3 people were killed and 13 wounded, bringing the total for the five weeks of Arafat’s “cease-fire” to 407 attacks, 16 dead, and 77 wounded:
